Overall I'm very happy ...
Overall I'm very happy with the magpul grip storage, well made and does what it's designed to do. I gave this a 4 for two reasons: First, as Gary stated the bolt and firing pin can rattle around and make some noise. This was easily fixed with a rubber band. Secondly the floorplate clip to remove this from the grip is relatively tight, with tired hands (or very cold hands) it would be potentially difficult to open. Overall it's a great concept and once the rattle was fixed with the rubber bands I'm very happy.
Great idea for carrying and extra bolt and pin.
Get some electrical tape to secure the pin and it works great. Every once in awhile you have to stop relying on someone else to hold your hand and fix it for you. I have one of these on all of my AR's and the only problem i have had was the firing pin not staying securely fixed in place. As I said wrap electrical tape around it and your good to go.
Mine Works Fine
First things first: Four Rifles, four bolt/firing pin cores, over five hundred rounds (and counting) fired through each rifle and NOT once has a core failed and dumped a pin and bolt. Yes, the pin will rattle if not secured by a small rubber band or neoprene o-ring. (that is by the way, the reason for the four star rating.) However, that rattle is an easy fix. Last things last: I'm not suggesting that all cores are perfect, but I have not had the same experience that other reviewers have had with this core.
Great idea
I have 2 of these on magpul grip insert . It's a great idea. Only issue I ran into is the firing pin comes loose with you're really moving or firing a lot. I ended up using a tiny piece of OD duct tape and solved that problem. No more loose firing pin and rattle.
2 Second Mod, Works Great
Several comments about the firing pin coming loose and rattling. It took me about 2 seconds to solve it and cost nothing. I put a small black rubber band around the whole thing; problem solved, pin stays in place. I wrapped a cleaning patch around the bolt and slid it in. If you don't have a small rubber band, try an O-ring. To those that say "I shouldn't have to....", C'mon, quit yer whinin' and put your big girl panties on. It's not like we actually need a spare bolt and pin on the rifle, it could rest comfortably in your range bag until needed.
Great idea
I have 2 of these Magpul grip core bolt and pin on MOE grip equipped carbines. It's a great idea. The only issue I ran into is the firing pin comes loose with you're really moving or firing a lot. I ended up using a tiny piece of OD duct tape and solved that problem. No more loose firing pin and rattle.
Works great with MOE grips also
I am using the Magpul storage core with MOE grips. Fits better than what comes with MOE grips with no rattling at all.
