    Eotech 518 Overview

The EOTech holographic weapon sight (HWS) family has a new member, the Eotech 518, which offers many features found in EOTech’s EXPS series. This Eotech 518 review takes a closer look at the model.

Introduced at the 2015 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, the Eotech 518 received a lot of attention from shooters and enthusiasts alike. This slim, lightweight sight features a 65 MOA reticle with a 1 MOA red dot, and its function buttons have been moved to the side to improve button manipulation speed and facilitate compatibility with other accessories like the EOTech magnifier.

The 518 runs on two AA batteries, and lithium batteries are recommended for maximum life, especially if used at lower brightness settings and normal temperatures. The reticle is either on or off, and if it blinks, it is time to replace the batteries. One unique feature of the 518 is its compatibility with EOTech’s drop-in laser battery cap (LBC) series, designed for engaging close to mid-range targets.

This model is easy to mount, configure, and use, and its housing is made of sturdy aluminum, making it built to last. The windage and elevations adjustors can be manipulated with a screwdriver or coin, and the elevation and windage should be close to the factory mechanical zero. The sight requires little maintenance other than occasional battery replacement, dusting of the protective hood, and cleaning of the lenses.

The HWS 518 comes with a limited 2-year warranty on defects in materials and workmanship and is made in the USA. While its manufacturer suggested retail price is $539, it is available for under $500 at various online and offline outlets.

The only complaint that some users have had is regarding battery life, but this is subjective and dependent on various conditions. The Eotech 518 is an excellent daytime sight that delivers all of the advantages of EOTech’s EXPS series, with a common power source and the option to use magnifiers and the new laser battery cap series. Overall, the Eotech 518 is a solid choice for civilians, military, and law-enforcement professionals looking to enhance their shooting experience.

    Surpassed my expectations....

    5 out of 5

I was thoroughly impressed with this optic and can understand why it is trusted by many law enforcement officers and military personnel around the world. The sight is incredibly rugged, and I opted for the 518 model, which has the same features as the 512 but utilizes EOTech's QD mounting system. Sighting in was easy, and the 2 dot system was helpful with aiming transitions between 50 to 100 yards. I have noticed that the electronics have greatly improved, and it is evident that EOTech has made significant changes in quality after the recent PR nightmare with the US Government. The thermal shift problems have been rectified, and the sight maintains zero very well. The fact that it runs on AA batteries is a plus, and I highly recommend using Lithium batteries and taking advantage of the mail-in rebate, which makes it a steal in my opinion. Overall, I highly recommend this sight.

As expected, a holographic sight demands more battery consumption than a simple red dot sight. This sight's battery life lasts for around 32 hours, depending on the intensity. Once mounted on the end of your rifle, the sight moves and keeps the target regardless of your eye position. It is designed to be viewed with both eyes open, which makes sense. The frame is tough and durable, with remarkably clear glass. The frame surrounding the glass is nearly unnoticeable, making the holographic sight stand out even more. This is a top-quality optic for mid to close-range shooting and could potentially perform well at longer ranges if the shooter is skilled. Overall, this sight earns a 5-star rating.

    Really nice holographic sight

This holographic sight is a great addition to any rifle. It is my first experience with EOTech and holographic sights, and so far, it has been a pleasant experience. While I still prefer iron sights or the ACOG from Trijicon, this EOTech sight is half the price and makes up for any perceived shortcomings. The sight requires batteries and a power switch, unlike the ACOG, which has no need for batteries and is ready to use immediately upon shouldering the weapon. With the EOTech, the user must turn it on and adjust the intensity of the crosshair depending on the ambient light. However, it is still a great sight for range use. In terms of quality, fit and finish, and cost-effectiveness, this sight gets 5 stars. While my personal preference is 3 stars, I objectively give it a 5-star rating. Overall, it is a great addition to any rifle, and I hope this review helps. Happy hunting and target practice!

    Fantastic optic

EOTech and Aimpoint are regarded as top-tier laser optics brands for a good reason. The EOTech 518 is no exception, offering quick and accurate target acquisition with a large anti-reflection window and thin metal frame. The sight's parallax-free reticle points where the barrel does, even if your eye is not directly behind it. While some may complain about the "fuzzy" appearance of EOTech reticles, this is typically due to the brightness being set too high for the current environment or a need for an optometrist. However, those with clear vision can attest to the clarity of the reticle. Despite the premium price, the EOTech 518 is worth every penny. Notable features include the quick-detach system, which enables easy attachment and detachment from rails while maintaining zero, and the side-mounted brightness buttons, which allow for left-hand adjustments while holding the rifle up. Overall, the EOTech 518 is a solid choice for those looking for top-quality optics.

    Quick Aim Easy Adjustment

    Location:
    Date: February 21, 2023

The sight arrives in a durable plastic case and comes with batteries. After laser bore sighting, the sight was zeroed with only 6 rounds at 36 yards. Although the adjustment dials could have been more tactile, it was not a significant issue. The QD mount is secure and easy to remove, featuring a lockout button to prevent inadvertent actuation of the QD lever. For optimal results, it is recommended to mount the sight, tighten the screw, remove the sight, turn the screw another notch, then reattach the sight. The sight remained zeroed after detachment and reattachment. The sight glass remained clear despite being touched with dirty hands. The reticle edges are not as crisp as expected, but as a first-time HWS user, it was not a major issue. The sight has a broad adjustment range that allowed for clear visibility on a white target on a sunny day and reduced brightness for indoor use at night. While the sight may be a bit bulky, it is well-suited for rifles with an 18" barrel, and the ability to use AA batteries is a plus. However, for a carbine, the shorter XPS2 might be a better choice.

I received my EOTech 518 a65 about a month ago, What a fantastic weapon site, I know they are a little expensive but well worth every penny. I am cross-eyed dominant, which means I am right-handed but left-eye dominant. With the EOTech, it allows me to shoot right still handed while maintaining a good sight picture.

This is an excellent optic for the price. It provides quick target acquisition with both eyes open out to 100 yards. It has a wide viewing area for superior visibility and no parallax error. It is rugged. The EOTech 518 uses inexpensive conventional batteries. It includes Auto-off and adjustable brightness features. Lower the brightness to just enough for finer lines and enhanced precision. There is no magnification, so you need to investigate options for greater than 100 yards, either a complimentary, compatible magnifier or an alternative product such as 1-4, 1-6 scope.

This was my first Eotech weapon sight. Mounted it to my Black Rain AR-15. This EOTech 518 went with this model for the ease of finding batteries for it, even though it's going to be a tad heavier. Can tell its built tough to take some serious hits. This sight makes for some high-speed target aquisitioning, definitely recommended!

It's an Eotech 518, it does what every EOTech does, and it does it very well. The quick detach lever has a great tight lockup and is very easy to operate. Sighting in is a piece of cake. Having the buttons on the side is much easier to use than having them on the back. It feels like a quality piece of equipment.

I know EOTech has a bad reputation for the stupid stuff they pulled with the temperature compensation cover-up, but the sight works for me. I hope they have learned their lesson and canned the bad apples and can know to repent and move on!

    Big Fan

Been a fan of the brand for many years and this new model is going to maintain it away. I have read some articles on how EOTechs are not holding at Arctic temperatures or some crap like this, but I don't care. I use this on a 12 gauge and my AK47. I do not run obstacle courses or put it in the water, I go out into the woods or quarries and shoot a lot of stuff with my buddies. I haven't used this site further than 125 meters apart, But to that space, I can shoot DVDs out of your hands daily. Easy to zero in and even detaching times it holds with no issues. I do not mind the dimensions of this, because I would instead buy AA batteries than these small ones for the price. Aimpoint fanboys, I do not plan on leaving my gun sights on for 500+ hours without turning it off, so that is not an argument or a point. If anything, I feel that not turning it off makes you a negligent shooter and anything said invalid. Excellent accessory for casual to hardcore shooters. The cost is heavy but well worthwhile. I have seen lots of the 200ish dollar imitation sights break after being dropped or lose zeroes after swapping weapons. Never had this problem with any EOTech I have Ever possessed, but if I do promise to return and edit this review with pictures/video evidence.
