I bought this Leupold Vx r patrol scope

I bought this Leupold Vx r patrol scope to use on a CZ550 FS rifle in 6.55X55mm Swedish for woods hunting at a range of 200 meters or less. I feel that this scope's physical and optical properties are optimal for this rifle in this application. Optically, I rate it as marginally superior to the 1.1-4X 30mm Kahles scope that I have on another gun, being slightly brighter and sharper. Both have similar powers and a highly popular 30mm tube. The reticle is superior; I find it better than any other illuminated reticle that I have seen. I would buy it again happily.

Excellent optic for the money. it is pounding a 15in gong at 500yds with 16in barrel 300 aac blackout. Like others, I initially had trouble with the fire dot reticle. Turns out, its not the optic at all, it comes with a universal scope manual, and I couldn't find any guidance online. 4 of the eight illumination settings are very difficult to impossible to see in bright daylight. I was pushing the button over and over again wondering why it wasn't always coming on; I couldn't see it. It cycles dim to bright and so on, and so on, so 8 of the button pushes were not visible. Also, the auto on/off is excellent now that I know how to use it. To turn off, hold the button for a few seconds. To turn on just hit it once, then it will turn itself off when not in use and come on when carried. Just take it into a dark room and play with it for a minute. It's more comfortable when you can see what each button press does.

    excellent general purpose AR scope

The Leupold vxr patrol is an excellent scope. The glass is visible, and the adjustments track perfectly. I have read reviews that complain that the lines in the reticle are too coarse, that they cover too much of the target. This is NOT a scope intended for use punching holes through paper targets. For what the scope was designed for, the reticle works very well. My only complaint about the AR scope is that the turrets are, if anything, a little too easily adjusted, and so it doesn't take much to bump them out of adjustment.

great AR scope without turret locks

This is an excellent rifle scope I have been running on my AR for almost two years now. The Leupold Vx patrol is super quality but has a few quirks. The first one is the thickness of the reticle lines - which is precisely how they should be for faster target acquisition. But many AR's are capable of better accuracy than these big crosshairs allow as they cover smaller targets past 100 meters. My second concern is the only real one: the turrets have no locking ability, and mine move a LOT. For a tactical scope, you need to know that your zero has not shifted 6 inches left. "Gee, my windage is off - do I adjust left, ..... or right?" And there are no zero indexes on the turrets for counting revolutions. Other than this obstacle, the scope is lightweight and compact and functions as it should. I have the original battery still, and it seems to be going strong. The first is excellent, and I often dial it down to a minimum for more precision shooting. This is a scope that gets used and carried, so I appreciate the weight and quality. I will find my way to fix those wandering turrets because everything else works great, and we rarely find perfection.

    Extremely sturdy scope

Enormous scope, clear glass, precise controls. The only reason I give it 4 instead of 5 stars is that this Leupold patrol scope would be perfect if it were a real 1X power rather then 1.25X on the lowest setting.

Great Leupold Vx-r patrol scope for ARs

    5 out of 5

I bought this Leupold Vx-r patrol scope for an AR chambered in 5.56, its obvious marketing target. It's mounted using the Burris QD PEPR mount and needed only a couple clicks of elevation for a 200 yard zero, no windage needed. This was a first for me, and I guess an indication that machining technology is still getting better. Its a perfect scope for this weapon system at this price point. I couldn't find anything comparable with the features I wanted; mil/mil, illumination, decent glass, and near 1x on low power. Having a true 1x isn't critical for since I only have one relatively right eye, but most people who have two shouldn't have much issue shooting both eyes open. The illumination is excellent at any light level and easy to use. My only complaint is that if you press the button a bunch, it pushes all the air out of the battery compartment, and the button gets vacuumed down (stuck). It is easily fixed by just giving the battery cover a slight twist to allow air back in. I don't find it to be a big issue, but this is likely the source of the complaints from others. The reticule geometry is well suited for the 5.56/.223, and probably .308. I zeroed it at 200 yards, hold halfway between the center and bottom of the ten mil circle (2.5 mils) for 500 yards, and the bottom of the circle takes me to just over 600 yards with a 69g bullet. This gives super quick aquisition for targets from 10-600 yards. Using the mil dots allows for more precision if you have the time. However, here is where my major complaint comes in; the reticule needs to be finer for real accuracy past a few hundred yards. If the reticule was half as thick I would have bumped my rating up. I guess we can get that in the higher-priced models. So if you want something that can do real precision, you may want to spend a bit more for a finer reticule. The glass is acceptable, and I am probably a little too critical, but I am not very impressed. I have no complaints about low power, and it works well at night, but I find I get a lot of aberration at 4x, and its resolving ability is less than I like. I am a bit spoiled by my other scopes, so I probably shouldn't compare this scope to something 3x the cost. I haven't had a chance to compare it to other brands in this price range. The knobs are excellent with defined clicks. The power ring is a little stiff but should loosen up with use. I am planning on putting a cattail on it. Overall, I am thrilled.

I bought this Leupold Vx r patrol scope

I bought this Leupold Vx r patrol scope for the 2011,2012 hunting season. I mounted it on a Remington 750 Carbine in 35 Whelen with Leupold standard base and rings. The size and weight were a perfect match for the 750, although I couldn't think of a better scope for an AR-style rifle. The SPR reticle was very useful and easy to use, the BDC marks held, and I was able to take a coyote at a laser 267 yards needless to say it was DRT. The Firedot helped me to take a smallish hawk at dusk. It was in a bottom with a bunch of small trees and brush. I could make out the outline of the hawg but couldn't line up the crosshairs for all the little limbs I lit op the firedot and BANG!!! DRT.I took a couple of deer with it as well, and I must say it an enormous scope considering you get so much for the price. I was in the rain, cold and hard hunting with no issues, no fogging, and no loss of zero. I liked the SPR reticle better than the pig plex because it was less crowded and had more BDC marks.
