    FAQ:

How do I know what SXS-762 Profile (height) to choose?

There are two standard heights of .308 AR receivers on the market, Armalite/DPMS High, and DPMS low. The DPMS Low is not the same as the DPMS GII. To be sure you are choosing the correct Samson handguard for your AR10 style rifle, you can call the manufacturer of the receiver or measure from the center of the bore to the top of the receiver.

If it is approximately 1.32”, this is Armalite/DPMS high and you will need the H series. If it is roughly 1.25” it is DPMS low and you will need the L series.

Measuring the height from the center of the bore to the top of the receiver: To Measure the distance from the center of the bore to the top of the receiver you will need a set of calipers. Measure the diameter of the threads and divide that number by 2. Then measure from the bottom of the threads to the top of the rail on the receiver. Use that result and subtract the divided number; which is the height from the center of the bore to the top of the receiver.

Demystifying the AR-308 Upper Receivers: Your Essential Guide to Handguards and Compatibility

Lets illuminate the somewhat chaotic world of the AR-308 platform, especially when it comes to finding the perfect handguard for your AR-10 or AR3 weight firearm.

Understanding the AR-10 and AR-308 Dilemma

In the realm of AR-308, selecting compatible parts can be a daunting task, primarily because there has never been an established industry standard like we have with the AR-15. The term "AR-10" originated as a brand-specific name referring to the Armalite pattern of 308 rifles developed by Eugene Stoner in the 1950s. Unfortunately, over the years, it became a catch-all phrase for any AR pattern rifle chambered in 308. This generic usage has stirred confusion, given the significant differences in parts compatibility between the original AR-10 and other prevalent AR-308 platforms.

Identifying Upper Receiver Profiles: The Key Factors

When embarking on the task of identifying the suitable upper receiver profile, two vital aspects come into play: the distance from bore axis to the top of the receiver, and the barrel nut thread pattern. Currently, the market houses four main upper receiver profiles, each with distinct characteristics:

    1. Armalite AR-10: Known for sharing similar height dimensions with the DPMS high profile upper receivers, these receivers feature a 1-7/16x18 TPI thread pattern and a unique angled cut at the back.

    2. DPMS LR-308 (Low Profile): These receivers showcase a 1-7/16x16 TPI barrel nut thread pattern, but have distinctive dimensions from bore axis to the top of the receiver, differing from their high-profile counterparts.

    3. DPMS LR-308 (High Profile): Along with sharing a thread pattern with the low-profile variant, these receivers feature different measurements from the bore axis to the top, offering unique compatibility options.

    4. DPMS LR-G2: Standing apart as a novel entity, the LR-G2 offers a lightweight alternative with the same user interface as an AR-15, fostering a seamless transition between the two platforms.

Accurate Measurement: The Path to Compatibility

For those who already own a 308 upper receiver and are aiming to identify its profile, precise measurement is paramount. Utilizing a set of calipers, measure the receiver tang, situated above the charging handle. This measurement is critical in distinguishing between the various profiles and securing compatible parts. Moreover, checking the receiver barrel nut threads using a thread gauge can offer further clarity.

    Handguards: Making the Right Choice

At Samson Manufacturing, we provide a broad spectrum of handguard options, catering to each upper receiver type, from DPMS high profile to Armalite AR-10, and beyond. Whether you are seeking lightweight options or venturing into the DPMS evolution series, our collection is designed to meet your needs. While selecting, ensure to choose the accurate upper receiver profile from the drop-down menu on our website to facilitate a seamless purchase.

Forging Ahead: The Future of AR-308 Receivers

As of mid-2021, we anticipate new products to grace the market, potentially introducing variations that diverge from the existing examples. Despite the prospects of adopting standards, the sheer diversity of existing variations may always pose a challenge for enthusiasts and professionals alike. Therefore, when in doubt, we urge you to consult with the manufacturer for precise details.

    lightweight ar 10 handguard

    5 out of 5

I acquired the SXS for my S&W M&P10 primarily because of its aesthetic appeal and weight. While I'd readily rate this handguard a full 5 stars, I did need to make a minor modification for its installation, specifically removing the two anti-rotation tabs that weren't aligning with the receiver slots. Nonetheless, I've encountered zero issues with this handguard. It's impressively sturdy, remarkably lightweight, and has an excellent grip. Plus, it looks fantastic!

Great lightweight ar 10 handguard well built, easy fit

This was a straightforward installation and the mounting system this uses makes it hassle and guess-free. Tighten barrel nut, slide it on, crank down the bottom screws and you're pretty much done. The barrel nut does not interfere with the gas tube at all on my DI system. Guard feels great in my hand, and there are no sharp edges.
