Sadlak M1A Scope Mounts
First of all let us introduce you to the rifle platform the M1A, a civilian legal version of the M14 battle rifle, which emerged from the most venerable of American combat arms, the M1 Garand. The great American company Springfield Armory, Inc. released in 1974 a semi-auto only version of the M14 with exclusive title M1A and allowed to ordinary people to possess a striking piece of American history.
Owning a battle or assault rifle such as M1A, FN FAL or Kalashnikov is a dream of many weapon collectors and veterans alike, but also a nightmare when they need to mount up a riflescope. Neither of them was ever designed to mount a scope out of the box, and the M1A rifle from Springfield Armory is no exception. Anyone who has done a fair amount of reading on these firearms knows that scoping them can be the source of extreme irritation.
Any effort to scope standard battle rifle has always involved specially built and fitted scope mounts since these foot soldier`s primary weapon was never made to take an optical sight as issued. The problem with scoping an M1A rifle has always been that most conventional scope mounts require removing the factory stripper clip guide on the rifle's receiver which can be a real headache.
However, if your M1A is intended for hunting, it is worth considering a quality built M1A scope mount as well. The owner by putting the scope mount on his rifle expands as well the potential of the gun as long shooting, hard hitting the 7.62 NATO/.308 cartridges. In other words, the marksman who is shooting only with the iron sights, limiting himself to about one half to one third the potential of his rifle.
There were the plethora of similar performing scope mounts who failed to perform in military field conditions, but there are only a few who withstand the test of time. As most of the knowledgeable readers assumed, the U.S. military initiated the development of M14 scope mounting solutions, and the most successful design was the legendary battle proven Brookfield Precision Tool special production run of lightweight steel mounts for the Special Forces in the 1980's.
At this point, we are coming to the manufacturer Sadlak Industries mainly known for the production of rifle parts, optics and mounting and gunsmith tools. As Sadlak Industries recognized the potential of BPT rugged steel mounts, they created their variant with several small (precisely 6) but essential improvements. In a nutshell, Sadlak's Brookfield-type scope mounts are a real 3-point design that allows removal and re-assembly without losing zero.
Mike Sadlak of Sadlak Industries LLC and his dedicated precision toolmakers offered extremely well-engineered scope mounts made from quality materials that are also lightweight and feature a mounting system that provides multiple secure points. Aside from the military grade M1A/M14 Steel Scope Mount, they also produce comparable mounts made from either aluminum or titanium with such an affordable price that every sportsman can now afford one. The aluminum version is lighter in weight and lower in cost but, unlike other manufacturer`s cheap and soft aluminum mounts the Sadlak Industries is an excellent example of a lightweight scope mount that meets all of the quality requirements for rifles used in less demanding circumstances and hunting.
Since the design is nearly as old as the M1A and M14 itself, Sadlak mount is superior regardless of whether material it is made of. The original steel mounts are fully machined from stress-relieved 4142 chrome-moly steel bar, titanium mounts (weighs 40% less than steel) are manufactured from an aerospace-quality hot-forged billet, and the same rugged design is also made from 7075 heat-treated aircraft aluminum. Though the standard model is available in three strength-to-weight combinations, they all have the same specifications: 5-7⁄16" (13.8cm) long, 2" (5.1cm) wide and, 1¾" (4.4cm) high.
Featuring a standard Picatinny rail machined to MIL-STD-1913, the Sadlak mount also provides an open sight channel giving an unobstructed view of backup iron sights. Additionally, this excellent and well-thought design scope mounts featuring a 5-degree case deflector angle milled on the underside of the mount to aid in deflecting spent casings out of the way of the bolt. That will cancel a widespread problem that many had when shooting scope mounted M14/M1A rifles.
Packaging includes mounting hardware and the detailed installation instructions which are little intense and rigid for someone with little experience. But the mount will remain solidly in place once it has been correctly installed on Springfield M1A because three-point contacts ensure the mount will not move under all conditions.
Indeed, there are more advanced designs, but Sadlak mounts are among the most reliable designed to military specifications the machining, the fit and finish are excellent. While a bit pricey compared to other mounts this mount is top quality made to withstand the rigors required for range, field or service uses.
