The Elcan Dual Role weapon sight has altered the standard in battlefield optics and became a favorite combat optical sight of many Special Forces units. When Raytheon ELCAN released the first of its Specter DR line; the 1x-4x Optical Sight as a new development in a scope industry changed everything drastically. This brand-new design is primarily customized for a modern tactical concept and the challenges of current conflicts. The SpecterDR 1x-4x Dual Role Optical Sight is conceived as its name says for both Medium Range and CQB engagements with the simple throw of a lever. In another word, the operator can switch instantly from a 4x magnified sight to a 1x close combat battle mode by turning the power selector lever. Using that unique technique the Elcan SpecterDR 4x/1x Dual Role provides an optimized optical path with identical eye relief in both 4X and 1X modes with ELCAN'S legendary crystal clear image. This high performance switchable 1-4x combat optic has dual-field-of-view. The first mode is a 1X unity powered (reflex type) sight with an extra-large 26° Field-of-View (146.3 ft. at 100 yds.) and the second at 4X magnification has a generous 6.5° Field-of-View (34.2 ft. at 100 yds.).
Unlike typical sights with zoom mechanisms where you are sliding lenses backward and forwards in an erector tube, the Elcan uses a unique technique. Which means the shooter with the flip of the power selector lever is rotating a second lens group that serves to decrease or increases the magnification of the primary group. The Elcan has the ability for extremely fast target acquisition in low light conditions due to its 32mm objective lens diameter that offers 56% larger lens area than the most of the competitive combat scopes with 24mm objectives. It is compact but robust, and with its 22.7oz weight including mount, the Elcan is significantly lighter than comparable designs with smaller objectives. Except for the integral A.R.M.S. mount, the sight also has integrated BUIS (Back-Up Iron Sights), that are zeroed with the scope.
One of the very few complaints was untypical energy source (DL 1/3N lithium battery) in old versions which are solved by introducing common CR2032 lithium battery in the new generation of popular ELCAN Specter DR combat optics at SHOT Show 2017. The new thinner CR2032 batteries require the slimmer battery container/illumination turret and ensure 600+ hours of bright daylight illumination of the red dot, or 6,000 hours of the entire reticle at the dull light.
The Elcan Specter series dual-role 1x/4x sight is offered in two versions for 7.62 NATO and 5.62 Nato with the reticles reflecting ballistic drops of both calibers and was adopted by the US SOCOM as the SU-230/PVS.

Elcan Specterdr 7.62 does many things very well.
elcan specterdr 7.62 The Elcan Specterdr 7.62 scope my not be “the best” clarity, “the best” magnification, “the best” for lightweight, but instead of doing one thing perfectly, it does many things very well. My first experience with Elcan Specterdr 7.62 was a night vision scope we used on our LMGs and SAWs. That was back when iron sights were still a primary combat optic. This company has been improving since then, and it shows. If you need a multi-roll optic that’s reliable and durable, this is it. Or the 1-6-9 version of the Spectre, the TR model.
no comparison
say what you want about the other combat scopes on the market, this is the top of the line hands down.
Elcan SpecterDR is awesome!!!
All in all it is an awesome sight. IMO is better than an ACOG/RMR combo because you have to have different head positions for the ACOG/RMR combo. The one downside is that you do have to have a consistent cheek weld in order to see through it unlike a holo sight. Otherwise it is a well built unit that has very easy to use adjustments and the glass is amazing.
