Handy, affordable, accurate.
For reloaders, this item is nearly indispensable. It would be even better if it included 38 special, which I initially mistook for 38 SUPER. Nonetheless, the other three calibers are a perfect fit, and the price is reasonable when compared to comparable products. Overall, a fantastic purchase!
Must have for reloading
Primarily, I acquired this tool to inspect 9mm brass. As any seasoned reloader knows, the "Glock bulge" is a concern when reloading 9mm, requiring extra care during the process. Because I am able to fully resize my other calibers using push-through dies, I have not utilized the additional sizes this tool offers. Nonetheless, I find it to be a well-constructed tool that I anticipate will serve me well for many years to come.
Great headspace gauge
To address issues with loading 125gr 9mm (flat nose, hard cast bullets), I purchased this headspace gauge. Despite using my Walther's barrel, I was unable to pass the 'plunk' test with most of the rounds. Using the gauge, I verified that many of the cartridges I loaded did not meet the required specifications. Subsequently, I realized that the root cause was the depth at which the bullets were seated. Upon adjusting the bullet seat depth, all cartridges passed the headspace gauge test and fit perfectly in the chamber.
Perfect for Tight Chambers, Awesome Tool!
The multi-caliber capability of this tool is undoubtedly a significant advantage; I personally use it for both 9mm and 45. Its quality is exceptional, surpassing some of the EGW components I have previously utilized. What surprised me, however, was how perfectly it functions for verifying ammunition in tightly chambered firearms such as CZ, M&P 2.0, and Gen5 Glocks. Compared to my Lyman gauge, which is quite loose, the EGW gauge is much more precise, preventing me from loading rounds that may not safely fit. This has saved me a great deal of time and frustration. I am uncertain why another reviewer had difficulties with 9mm 147gr FN, as I have successfully tested 115 RN, 147 plated RN, 147 FN plated, and FMJ rounds, all with excellent results. Likewise, I have used 200gr plated and 230 FMJ rounds in 45 with no problems.
Very Nice
The EGW gauge outperforms its pricier counterparts. Initially, I acquired the costly cutaway Sheridan Engineering 45ACP gauge, only to discover that it permitted cartridges that failed to fit in my pistol. Conversely, the EGW gauge rejected anything that did not fit. In order to compare the two gauges, I fashioned an identical slot in the EGW 45ACP hole, which Sheridan Engineering had previously milled. The contrast was striking: the EGW gauge boasted a flawless, sharp transition between the bullet and the case. This precision was greater than that of the expensive Sheridan gauge.
Good tool to have for reloaders
This EGW Ammo Chamber Checker can measures the four most popular size cartridges quickly. I have found it to be accurate. EGW makes a good tool to double-check your hand loads.
