Magpul Furniture: Survival Gear Review

It is a well-known fact that hardcore survival tech enthusiasts swear by Magpul accessories. Be it their Grips, Stocks, PMAGS or MBUS, Magpul has been known for their reliability and innovative design. Let us explore and review what makes Magpul furniture unique among the competition and decide for ourselves if there is any substance to the hype.

Magpul Industries Corporation was founded in the late 1990s by Richard M. Fitzpatrick, a Sergeant of the USMCFR. The company started operations in Erie, Colorado but due to recent changes in State Gun-control legislations, the production, distribution and shipping operations have been shifted to Wyoming and headquarters relocated to Texas.

MagpulMagpul offers a wide array of products, all of which can be easily accessed and purchased online through their website www.magpul.com. To determine what makes Magpuls products so popular, we decided to test the furniture available for the AR-15 platform.

We tested the Angled Fore Grip and though it takes time to get fully familiarised with its handling, the overall controllability during recoil was exceptional and exhibited short recoil recovery times for subsequent shots.

Next on our list was the Magpul MBUS, The MIAD (Mission ADaptable) Grip Kit, MOE Hand Guard, and the Magpul ACS Carbine Stock.

The MBUS (Magpul Back-Up Sight – Front) are relatively cheaper, colour injection moulded, folding back-up sights that are adjustable for elevation and fits most 1913 Picatinny-railed hand guards. They have been designed specifically for the AR15 platform. The robust polymer build offers impact resistance without any weight penalties which bode well for heavy usage. It has a spring-loaded flip up sight which can be activated from either side or by pressing the top, making it convenient for use both in the range or the field. Furthermore, the detent and spring pressure helps in keeping the sight erect without hindering the folding action on impact. It comes bundled with an elevation adjustment tool and is also compatible with most aftermarket A2 front sight adjustment tools. The only disadvantages of this cheap and efficient MBUS is that it is incompatible with railed gas block and MOE Hand Guards.

The Magpul MIAD (Mission ADaptable) GEN 1.1 Grip serves as a replacement for the standard AR15/AR10 grip with configurations that fit most receivers. The front and rear straps are interchangeable providing a customisable hand fit suited to ones preferences and is compatible with all Magpul grip cores making it suitable for easy storage. Moderately priced. It comes in two configurations, the TYPE 1 Kit (MAG520) for most 5.56×45 and 7.62×51 AR receivers and the TYPE 2 Kit (MAG521) for some 7.62×51 size receivers.

The Magpul MOE Hand Guard for AR15 rifles offer an efficient and price sensitive alternative to the standard AR15 hand guards. The innovatively designed heat resistant and strengthened polymer structure reduces the weight without limiting its operational effectivity. The rifle-length gas systems have slots at the two, six, and ten o’clock positions for mounting of optional Picatinny rail sections. It also has provisions for attaching tactical lights, slings, grips and other AR-15 accessories. It is compatible with both ‘direct impingement’ and most piston-driven gas systems and has a relatively simple installation procedure.

Currently Magpul offers collapsible, fixed and precision adjustable buttstocks for the AR-15 platform. The collapsible buttstocks range from MOE (Magpul Original Equipment) Carbine to Utility Battle Rifles while the fixed and precision adjustable stocks range from MOE rifles to Precision rifles/Sniper stocks. The Magpul ACS (Adaptable Carbine/Storage) Carbine stock is a collapsible buttstock for AR15/M16 carbines using commercial spec sized receiver extension tubes. Those familiar with the Magpul CTR (Compact/Type Restricted) would be right at home with the ACS which also features an additional friction lock system that helps in reducing excessive stock movement improving both weapon stability and accuracy. Inadvertent activation is prevented by its streamlined, anti-snag profile design. Storage options are further optimised with the integrated storage compartment in the rear of the stock and two water resistant battery storage tubes storing up to three CR123 lithium or two AA batteries. The thick rubber butt-pad provides protection against impact and enables seamless use with any body armor or modular gear due to its slip proof design. The Magpul ACS Carbine stock is available in two basic sizes of M4 Carbine receiver extensions, mil-spec and commercial-spec. Users should check compatibility with their equipment before placing an order.

Magpul also provides some great PMAG options. Check out the next-generation PMAG 40 GEN M3 40-round 5.56×45 NATO (.223 Remington) polymer magazine for the AR15 platform. In addition to its enhanced strength, durability, and reliability it is also compatible with firearms such as the HK 416/MR556A1/M27 IAR, British SA-80, and FN SCAR MK 16/16S to name a few.

After reviewing the above products, the verdict is clear. Magpul has definitely lived up to its name. Its wide variety of accessories for various weapon platforms give users and enthusiasts fantastic alternatives to the limited options that manufacturers usually provide. The ergonomic design of their products make them easy to use and improve overall operational performance. Hardy product construction and innovative use of new materials add to improve the durability of their products without sacrificing on quality or increasing their weight. The only drawbacks are the relatively higher pricing in comparison with vendors providing similar services and their product line up which may seem limited to some platforms, but that’s okay taking into consideration the quality of their equipment and the numerous customisation options available.
