When space is limited, or concealment a must, the folding stock is the best way to go. In this way the overall length of the standard shotgun is significantly reduced by 9-10 inches or, put it another way, the shotgun is much more compact, as the pistol grip only adds about 3 inches to the OAL of the shotgun. Arguably, it was the old Remington 870 top-folding steel stock from the 70´s and legendary Franchi SPAS 12 (Special Purpose Automatic Shotgun) collapsible metal stock with a pivoting shepherd's crook' that inspired many shotgun makers to create their own top folding stocks permitting the gun to be shot one-handed from the hip quite handily. Though an excellent concept, a top folding metal stock has gotten many complaints over the years from operators since a steel stock arm are not comfortable, while the steel buttpad is hard against the shoulder when firing heavy loads or Magnum slugs. The main problem with the stock was solved with the new era of modern polymer materials and Advanced Technology International (ATI), based in U.S., is one of the leading manufacturers of premium reinforced polymer aftermarket gun parts. Among a vast assortment of folding stocks that turn typical 12-gauge pump action shotgun into a home defense weapon, an ATI top folding stock offers the best of all worlds regarding a shotgun.
The folding stock is irreplaceable in an urban setting when space restriction does not allow a full-length shotgun while still having a stock that is functional when needed. The shotgun with ATI top folding stock folded over the gun is short enough to be easily maneuvered, and with the stock unfolded the shooter has a full-length stock duplicating the standard factory LOP of 14", enabling him to engage even a mid-range targets. In the same time, ATI`s folding stock gives an owner tacticool image of a professional operator. As one could expect from the military grade Top Folding Stock, the gun can be fired in opened or folded positions with the simple push of a button allowing the stock to lock in folded or unfolded positions. The ATI nice compact package weighing just 2 pounds is constructed of DuPont glass reinforced polymer, and despite feeling a bit lightweight, it is more rugged than the assault rifle-style collapsing stocks. This style of folding stock is ambidextrous and features A2 style textured pistol grip, which permits excellent control while shooting with the stock in the stored position. The Stock is pre-drilled to accept ATI Shotgun 5-shotshell Holder (sold separately), and it includes sling swivel stud and two extra base plates to allow you to install this hardware on a Remington or Winchester shotgun. The ATI light and very durable side-folding stock does lock up solidly and folds perfectly making it a great stock for its intended purpose. While many will complain about recoil indeed, the ATI Top Folding Stock isn`t as comfortable as the ATI 6 position collapsible stock and some hot loads such as "00" Buck or 3" rounds might be a problem, but for its purpose as a home defense or tactical stock, it is great.
Although the folding stock with a pistol grip is a much more suitable choice than a pistol grip only stock, the most of the shooters using pistol grip on a shotgun are handicapped with some commands. Definitely, the Mossberg action button behind the trigger is hard to get to as well as getting safeties off on a with a pistol grip is impossible while retaining a firing grip, meaning the operator have to change his grip to hit the safety with a pistol grip. However, the top folding stock serves the purpose, and its functionality is perfectly allowing a shooter to go from Pistol Grip Only (PGO) firearm to a full-length stock with a push of a button. The installation is easy with clear instructions and with supplied a Philips head screwdriver and an Allen key.
