Air guns come in all sorts of sizes and shapes. Different manufacturers use different mounting systems. As a rule of thumb, you will usually find 11 mm dovetail grooves machined right into the top of the receiver on most air guns. But there are manufacturers who use a different system and install a rail on top of the receiver. You will need to check the width of the rail before ordering rifle scope mounts.

Think about your air gun for a moment. Is It a heavy-recoiling springer? If the answer’s yes, you’re going to want the stop that came with the gun. Usually, stop holes are provided by the manufacturer on top of the receiver just between the dovetails. If the rifle scope mounts you purchase have a stop pin, the pin goes into the hole to stop the entire system creeping back when you shoot. If no holes are provided, you can easily install a stop near the back of the dovetail. One-piece rifle scope mounts are a good investment for heavy recoiling guns as it will provide a longer gripping surface. These are extremely stable and will lessen your need for a stop.

To install rifle scope mounts, remove the top of the rings and place the product on the gun, fastening them. Don’t tighten the fastening screws initially as you may need to make one or two adjustments. Place your item in the rings and make the necessary adjustments for the perfect fit.

Mounting is not a difficult task, and the method will usually suit the majority of air guns. There are a few advanced methods for FT shooters and those devoted to accuracy that involve using a level and working up a chart to plot out the impact point of every type of pellet.
